The best free ASO tools for indie developers (2026)
You can do most App Store optimization for free. Apple gives you analytics, A/B tests, keyword popularity and review replies at no cost, and free browser tools cover keyword checks, rank checks and listing audits. Paid tools mostly add history, scale and convenience.
Most "best ASO tools" lists are written for teams with a budget. This one is for the solo developer deciding whether to spend anything at all. It's organized by job, starts with what Apple already gives you, and says where a free option runs out.
The short list, by job
| Job | Free option | Where it runs out |
|---|---|---|
| See why downloads are low | App Store Connect App Analytics | Your app only; no competitor data |
| Keyword popularity | Apple Ads keyword recommendations; Storeboard keyword check | Relative scores, not search volumes |
| Where you rank | Storeboard rank checker | A snapshot, not a daily history |
| Keyword field mistakes | Storeboard keyword field checker | Finds waste; doesn't choose words for you |
| Listing audit by country | Storeboard ASO review | Apple doesn't expose subtitles or keywords |
| A/B test your page | Product page optimization in App Store Connect | Needs enough traffic to reach a result |
| Screenshot design | fastlane frameit; Figma; Storeboard's free templates | Time, and every language multiplies it |
| Reply to reviews | App Store Connect | Manual, one at a time |

App Analytics
Every App Store Connect account includes App Analytics: impressions, product page views, conversion rate, downloads and where they came from. It also has peer group benchmarks that compare your conversion rate with similar apps. It's the most important ASO tool you have and it costs nothing. If you only open one thing this week, read how to find your downloads leak and open this.
Product page optimization
App Store Connect can A/B test your page for free. Product page optimization tests up to three alternate versions of your icon, screenshots and app previews against your current page, for up to 90 days, with the traffic split you choose. Tests without new icons don't need a new app version. The catch for small apps: a test needs enough visitors to reach a confident result, so on a few dozen page views a day, test one big change (a different first screenshot) rather than small tweaks.
Apple Ads keyword popularity
When you set up an Apple Ads Advanced campaign, Apple's keyword recommendations show a search popularity score from 1 to 5 for each keyword. It's Apple's own data, so it's a useful check on any third-party estimate. Setting up a campaign to look at recommendations doesn't charge you; running ads does.
Review replies
You can reply to App Store reviews in App Store Connect. A short, specific reply to a one-star review ("Fixed in 1.3, thanks for the report") is read by everyone who scrolls the reviews, not just the reviewer.
Free browser tools (no signup)
We built these for exactly the gap Apple's tools leave: looking at your listing from the outside, in any country, the way a searcher sees it. They run in your browser and use Apple's public endpoints.
- ASO review: checks 37 storefronts and shows which get your own localized name, description and screenshots, and which are served your base listing.
- Keyword check: popularity, difficulty and opportunity for any keyword, in any storefront.
- Rank checker: where an app ranks for a keyword in Apple's top 200, compared across countries, for iPhone or Mac.
- Keyword field checker: which words Apple indexes across your name, subtitle and keyword field, and which are wasted repeats.
- Launch checklist: the fields that block Add for Review, and common rejection triggers.
Free for screenshots and listings
- fastlane is open source. Its
snapshotcaptures screens from your UI tests, frameitadds device frames and captions, anddeliveruploads everything. Unbeatable in CI; slow to iterate on design. See fastlane frameit alternatives. - Figma has offered a free plan, and community screenshot templates are plentiful. It works well in one language; every extra language is another copy of every frame to maintain by hand.
- Storeboard (our Mac app) is free to download. The first three of its 20 screenshot templates are free including export, and agent access for Claude Code, Cursor and Codex is free. A one-time Pro purchase unlocks the rest, with no subscription.
When a paid tool is worth it
Paid ASO platforms such as AppTweak, Appfigures and Sensor Tower mostly sell three things free tools don't have: history (daily ranks for hundreds of keywords over months), competitor intelligence at scale (estimated downloads and revenue), and team workflows. Several have offered free trials or limited free plans; check their current pricing. As an indie, you need history when you're tracking more keywords than you can check by hand each week, usually well after launch. Until then, free tools and a spreadsheet are enough. How much keyword data you actually need goes into the trade-off.
A free ASO routine for one evening a month
- Open App Analytics and note impressions, page views and conversion for the last 30 days.
- Run the ASO review on your app and your top competitor.
- Check your five most important keywords with the rank checker.
- Run your name, subtitle and keywords through the field checker, and swap out words that didn't move.
- Reply to new reviews, then ship the changes with your next update.
